Safe Biking During the Hunting Season

Many trails pass through land that is open to hunting, including the popular DNR state recreation and forest areas. If you do ride in these areas, we encourage you to wear hunter orange and avoid riding at dawn or dusk when hunting is most active. Where allowed, riding at night may be a good option since deer hunting is not permissable after sundown.

Of course there are many trails in areas that do not allow hunting, including most city and county parks. The MMBA Trail Guide lists whether hunting is allowed. Riding rail-trails and dirt roads is another option.

The firearm deer season runs from November 15th through the 30th. Other types of hunting (e.g. bow, muzzle loader, small game) occur before and after these dates. Under state law, hunters in Michigan have the right to enjoy their sport free from deliberate interference. We ask that you please be respectful and help us maintain mountain bikers' positive image among other user groups.
