Chain Lube Recommendation

Postby TooFast46 » May 2nd, 2012, 1:28 pm

I'm looking for recommendations for chain lube because I still have yet to try an actual, designed for bicycles, chain lube. I mostly have problems with keeping the chain clean during the drier months of the West Michigan trails I ride leaving the chain all gunked up with sand and fine dirt/dust particles.

I've read reviews for products such as White Lightning Clean Ride and people saying one splash through a puddle and the lube is gone. I'll take that with a grain of salt, but I would think you would want something that holds up well enough for average to dry conditions. If something else works better for the wetter months I'll switch back and forth.

I've had very good luck for years with ProLink's ProGold in all weather. Their ProGold Extreme (aka Voyager) product is also excellent. It's a little thicker than the regular ProGold, but lasts longer.

While I generally go with ProGold, in muddy situations I've found that Pedro's Ice Wax works really, really well on my bikes that are prone to chain suckage.

Iv'e used many different chain lube products over the years. All chains will get gummy and blackened. Most lubes work well if you clean your chain every 10 hours or so. That said, the lube i found works best is Boeshield T-9 aerosol. Rarely have i ever had chain suck even while racing in muddy conditions. Can also be used to wet you shock stanchions and pedals.

Bike lube, like many other bike related choices, is a very personal decision. Myself, I like IceWax. Yes it does require more re-applications than other lubes, but in average to dry conditions it works great. Just wipe off the excess before your ride. Doesn't leave a black, greasy residue.

Chain Lube Recommendation

Postby JonathanGennick » May 2nd, 2012, 3:01 pm

I gave up being fastidious about chains. Chain-l lasts forever, so I can go a few weeks between lube jobs. I wipe the outside of chain down reasonably often. And that's all I've time to do.

I'm currently using White Lightning, but my preference changes. I think out of all the lubes I've tried, ProGold is definitely toward the top of the list. I *really* like Pedro's IceWax, but found that it wasn't good for longer rides (because of the need to frequently reapply).

I really like motorex dry lube. the thing with any lube is to put it on the chain rollers and not on the plates, then wipe off the excess. wiping the chain down is critical to not picking up a bunch of crud.

Dumonde tech for a dry/wax lube and Prolink for wet. The Dumonde seems to last longer than Ice Wax for me so far. Love it on the road bike too, quiet drivetrain.

I prefer most by RocknRoll Lube.. start with a dirty chain, lube it up, and then wipe it ALL off.. I reapply every 50 - 60 miles and then take the chain off and bathe in RocknRoll Red decreaser every 300 + miles to start over.. never had an issue or a noisy drivetrain..

Just to be clear, chain suck isn't so much caused by a lack of lube, it's caused by parts that are mis-fitting, often due to wear. Lube just helps alleviate the root cause.

I like Squirt Lube: http://www.squirtlube.com/

It last a reasonably long time, it is self cleaning, and seems to perform well. Being water based, you can't apply it in the rain, but once dry the wax itself repels water.

The main drawback is being water based, you need to degrease your chain (and drivetrain) really well before using, otherwise the oils break it down.

I have used the White Lightning in the past, but am currently making the move to Pedro's IceWax.

I have had a bottle of tri-flow for years and has done fine for my bikes. It seems like every LBS I visit carries it, is there a reason it has not been mentioned in this thread prior? ex. prone to sponstaneous combustion or anything else I should be aware of? haha
