for the bikes...

or you can find a couple bike trays that dont require you to remove the front wheel.

King cobras on roof rack bars, not permanent, extremely versatile, can be mounted to anything quickly and easily.

That F250 is a little overkill for hauling a few bikes, but I like it!

Thanks for asking the question Rich. I am in the process of building a trailer to pull my mountain bike behind my motorcycle. (52mpg instead of 15)

Lots of great ideas here.

It's a 350 :P

We had 5 people, and the bed was completely full of gear under the bikes, works out real nice for road trips.

This is my trailer, light enough to pull with a minivan and enough room for 8 bikes and all the gear.

This is from a recent trip to Georgia with 4 guys and 8 bikes.

If you look close you can see 2 bikes sideways in the front.

2 bikes fit best but I can rock out 7 if needed. No trailer yet, maybe in a few years if Team Troll were to need a dedicated trailer but first solid year it is hitch racks and roof mounts.

If you are converting a boat trailer look at standard car roof rack systems . You could fabricate your own cross bars from black gas pipe, then buy bike and Kayak mounts. You probably should add a floor to block road spray and rocks form kicking up into the kayaks and bikes. 1/2 inch strand board is cheap and will hold up when sealed with oil paint. Save the rear rollers so you can launch at a boat ramp. Remove/cut off the front post and add storage box for gear.
Consider reducining the length of the trailler to match the length of your Kayaks. You could probably reduce the length by 4 foot and still have room for 2 17 ' kayaks and 4 bikes.

This is Red Neck terriorty; tread lightly!

I was going to use black pipe for my set up but home depot didn't have the right diamter to work with the yakima plastic loops used to mount to the roof bars.

Regardless I agree, use roof rack components, mine is nice because I can take it off the truck and throw it on the explorer, or on a friends car, or anything else pretty easily.

I've decided that versatility is key. As is comfort and room on long road trips

Mr. xtremelow
That is a great rack design.
Now that you have published it, you have only 1 year to apply for a patent! After 1 year your design will become public propertty!
I have not seen that mechnism use for a bike rack, it might be novel!
If you are young or in college you might be able to get discounted legal help.
If you decide to prusue a patent look at adding as many features as you can. ( like a hole thru the plates for a lock) The more features you add the stronger the patent will be.

That's actually designed for dirt bikes I think.
