I need to borrow a derailleur hanger alignment tool

Postby Laser4G63 » May 24th, 2012, 9:43 am

I am heading up north tomorrow and I would like to know if someone nearby has one of these tools I could borrow ASAP. I called my LBS and asked them if they would do it and their suggestion was to "beat it with a hammer". Yes, that was their comment. They also suggested to buy a new one and replace it. Well, it is a new one, but for some reason appears to be tweaked. If you have one of these tools and are very close to Jackson and would be willing to let me borrow it please contact me. Thanks.

You might have to use the old ruler method on that one that is what I do. I need to open a cheap fix section due to the fact I am cheap.

I'd rather have the right tool. If no one has one nearby, I will see if one of the bike shops in TC can squeeze my bike in Tomorrow.

Buy from Amazon, have it shipped overnight? I think it's a worthy tool to own.

I will be buying one. I just needed to borrow one so I could ride this weekend while visiting family. I am sure McClain, Brick Wheels, or GT Cycle can fit me in.

FWIW, I've had good experience with Brick Wheel a few times when in TC and I had a sudden need for a repair to keep the vacation riding going. They've always been able to take care of me while I waited.

My brother and I use to know Tim Brick when I lived in TC. I bought a couple bikes from there and GT Cycle back in the day and had great experiences with both shops.

I bent a Der HAnger back to straight this spring. Monday it blew up completely after 18 of 19 miles. I'd just buy a new hanger so you can trust your bike beyond the fatigued aluminum in a flexed hanger.

FWIW, I find that having an extra hanger in your pack is the best insurance against any hanger problems. :P

The hanger on my bike is slightly different than what I am used to seeing. It's a two bolt hanger that bolts to the seat and chain stays (see pic). Plus the hanger is new. I will be purchasing the tool next week so I will be good there.

Even the used (straightened) one seems to be preventitive
but I'd just buy two if you can.

Your hanger could be made of hardened material. Bending it back straight could fracture it. You might not be able to detect the fracture. The hanger is probably both bent and twisted. Attempting to straighten a hardened hanger on the bike could damage the bike frame.
Old style hangers were made of soft aluminum and were designed to be re bent.
A hanger tool will check the frame as much as the hanger and be a good investment.

I hope your ride is going great with no mechanicals.

I'm back at home now. I already ordered the hanger tool. Never know when this tool may come in handy again.
