Large tree (chainsaw required) on the last 1/4 of the Crooked Lake trail.

There is a tree down near mile 11.5 that comes up quick after a blind turn.

what's up with the atv tracks

Postby konarider » June 17th, 2005, 8:20 pm

Rode entire trail today. In good shape, only a few puddles. ATV tracks all over the last few miles. Couldn't believe how much a horse can tear up the trail when it is soft.

As of 6/25, trail is in excellent condition. All of the trees have been cleared and the climbs aren't eroded into dust. The last 1/4 (crooked lk. section) needs some serious trimming though.

Doyle Rd Boardwalk is OPEN

Postby davidwelsh3 » August 11th, 2005, 8:35 am

You know that section of swamp that we have bypassed for years by riding on Doyle Rd? (the dirt road in the Gosling Lake loop) Well, the DNR has put in several sections of boardwalk over the mucky stuff so we can now ride the trail. So do not turn left on Doyle. Proceed directly across.

Got caught in the downpour on Sat. Had a blast! The first part of the shortcut (entering off of the dirt road) needs serious trimming. You have to do a lot of ducking the first 1/2 mile or so. Otherwise, trail is in good shape.

Rode poto today. Thurs/Fri rains did good things for the trail - it is in good shape, esp. the northern section. Some of the sand pits have firmed up a bit - a big change from earlier this week when things were very, very loose.

The little new trail section after the new boardwalk is starting to get worn in, also.

Rode Poto on Saturday between 2-4. Very nice. The sand Seemed extremely managable. Saw 4 hunters with Shot Guns near the back (North) part. Tried real hard not to look like small game.
Life is too short so, take a big gulp and enjoy

Rode Poto on 9/24. There are 2 rather large trees down towards the end of the first 4 mile loop. Chainsaw required. There are also a few trees down about 2-4 miles past the Hankerd Rd. crossing. There is a developing re-route around one and the other is manageable (ride over).

Other than that, the trail was in excellent shape!!!

I can't take all the credit, but there are 10-12 less trees across the trail than there used to be. Someone else cut some, but I went out today and cleared out several. The three trees about two miles in are gone, and the trees a little past Patterson Lake Rd are gone (Don't blame me for the cool log pile being removed...I didn't cut that one out!); including the one hidden behind the tree at the bottom of the hill. I cut that one completely out of the way so the old line is open again and there shouldn't be any risk of crashing into it. I also cut out a few others, including three in various locations that were between knee high and chest high. There may still be some trees down as I only covered about half of the trail.

By tomorrow the trails will be excellent. They were a little wet in spots today, but the sand and other loose gravel are not very loose any more. Time for some hot laps :D

Thanks Ed and whomever else is responsible for clearing the downed trees! I agree, after all the rains, the trail is probably in the best condition it's been in all year.

9/27 I was just out there today, 2 big trees down in the first 2 1/2 miles. As well as an assortment of smaller trees throughout. These trees were not there last week when I rode.

Should we be concerned about hunters on the Poto trail this time of year? I'm from out of state and will be coming in to hopefully ride Poto on 10/7. We planned to be out on the trail by 1-2 PM. I've done some searches, but its hard to figure out exactly whether hunters could be out there based on what I see for the various types of hunting going on. I know to wear orange and stuff (plus my bike is orange LOL), but should this be a concern? I really would rather not be out in the woods if people could be out there with guns. Thanks in advance!
