Riding Ruby Fifty alone?

Postby xycarp » June 20th, 2012, 8:32 am

I am looking to ride the Ruby 50 in August as a single - not a team. A couple observations / questions...

1. Since the race supports "teams", will a fat old guy riding the whole thing alone, be in the way of fast young guys riding short relay legs? How tight is the trail? Is this a valid question?
2. It looks like there are 6 hrs between start and award time. I don't really know the course so it's not clear to me how technical / fast it lays out. Covering it in 5 hrs requires a pace of 10MPH, which may be fast depending on how the course actually rides. I was not able to find results from previous years. I am trying to get some gauge of expected pace, compared to cutoff. Any suggestions? Anyone know where I can find previous year's results?

I am likely just going to say "screw it" and register anyway...

New event so no old data to share....The endurance events are low key, rest when & if you want.... little slower pace = better attitude on the trail is common place. The fast riders & teams make their way around the slower riders, not the normal " I on your left, right & gone, more like How ya doing? How many laps do you have? when you see a opening.....Thanks have a good ride" Open to ride any time, will mark the loop on fri b4 the race.

This looks like fun. Maybe interested in doing it solo also or if anyone wants to form a team. I ride rigid single speed so does anyone know how hilly or technical the course is?

for the single-speeders out there... this is a hilly course that requires several dismounts unless you choose the right gearing. I often go into granny-gear on my 3/9 29er there and still have a hard time making it up at least 2 climbs, none of which you can build speed going into.

I heard a rumor that there will be temporary bridges installed over the water crossings, is this true?

I live 3 miles from Ruby and have been riding that trail a long time (late 90's). Coincidentally, i am the TC also. I have been working feverishly to smooth out the trail and keep things trimmed. 4 hours fixing bench cuts last night. At an earlier trailday the first big climb was changed to alleviate erosion and scale back the grade. It is a much more enjoyable climb now. :)

Ruby is a grind no matter how you look at it. A 50 mile race at Ruby is a worthy challenge. Average speeds are much slower than at most races. Race lap times are generally between 26-34 minutes. This year the trail is dry and we have added about 800 feet of trail. NO bridge crossing for the race. However, we will have a special crossing for the 50 mile race only which is only about 4 to 6 inches of water and should be easily rideable.

Why do people insist on being douche bags and putting down other peoples work.

If you've rode Bloomer I compare it to that, but tighter and a little more climbing.
