Good Singletracks near Gaylord?

Postby Bunkaroo » July 14th, 2011, 6:32 am

So I will be down at the family cottage on Big Lake in Gaylord this weekend. When I'm down there I ride the Aspen trails over and over. So what are some other good singletrack trails to ride that are within 50-60 mile radius? I know Boyne City has the downhill trails but not sure what other trails there are that would be fun to ride. I rode the Holly Lake trails a few weeks ago when I was in Lapeer for a wedding and those were nice trails. I ride the Copper Harbor and Marquette trails so that is the kind of trails I'm looking for. Thanks for your help!

I believe that Hanson Hills are in the area. Haven't been myself but heard they are good. I'm sure someone will chirp in and talk about those...

Boyne Mountain has great a XC trails.
Shingle Mill Pathway is good. (near Vanderbuilt)
There are some good XC trails right in Boyne City at Avalanche Park.

You say Boyne Mt but are those XC trails or Singletracks?

For a nice easy scenic ride Shinglemill pathway is the best near Gaylord (20 miles or so) nice family ride, Boyne MT and Hansen hills are both great technical trails with good climbs and much more what your looking for. Boyne probably being closer to UP type of trails.

I'm in Gaylord for the week as well and have ridden all of the mentioned trails this week.

Boyne is definitely the most challenging. Hanson Hills wasn't really my thing....I didn't find it that enjoyable but I know other people do. Aspen Park is pretty cool for what it is....just have to ride it over and over for a workout. Shingle Mill Pathway is easy but absolutely beautiful...one of the most enjoyable rides I've ever done from a purely "taking in nature" perspective.

Some singletrack? It makes a lot lot of trails look like nothing. One of the best trails in the state if you can climb.

High Country Pathway heading east from Pigeon Bridge (same trailhead as Shingle Mill) towards the firetower site.

North Country Trail heading north from Slashing Road.

I focused on the 'some' which to me means a touch more than a litlle. Personally I'd descibe as a mix of XC trails and lots of sweet singletrack.
