Wildlife on the ride....

Postby PK » June 9th, 2012, 6:10 am

Interesting mix of wildlife on my ride to work today.
Possum, cat, deer and racoon all in the first mile.
Coyote on the MOT near 26 Mile and an interesting looking black cat down near 24 mile....No, on closer inspection, that black cat has a white stripe!, *beep* glad it decided to avoid me.....

Pete.

Once I had one of those decide to just waddle on down the singletrack in front of me. Had to think reeeeeallly long and hard about my passing etiquette.

Skunk, raccoon, squirrel, possum, and birds all in various stages between pancake and balloon.

I Nearly hit a tiny fawn today at Stony. I came around a corner and couldn't see it - it was so small and it blended in so well. It zigged on its wobbly little legs, and I zagged and somehow I missed it. That would have been terrible. Momma was 30 feet down below us and came running our way, but stopped short when she saw me, and that her fawn had gotten away OK. I apologized to both.

I also had a close encounter of the skunk kind on Jack Rabbit Mountain trail in NC a few years ago. Saw him on the trail several yards ahead and accelerated in order to blow by him. Did a quick swerve as I passed him and got the *beep* out of there before he could unleash his secret weapon.

Lots of Turkeys - stupid animals. Had one in front of me at PLRA and he would not get off the trail, so I chased him for about a quarter mile. Nearly ran over a Porcupine on the Mqt south trails. That could have gotten ugly.

I've never seen a wild turkey on the trail, although a lot of people have on trails I ride pretty regularly. I see deer all the time during after-work evening rides, and I once had a very near-miss with a skunk at the Poto few weeks ago. I was very lucky not to get sprayed by that one.

I think it's a rite of passage for chipmunks to run past speeding mountain bikes. The one that darts between the front and rear wheels is KOM, or something. :P

I've ridden out to Island Lake from Wixom a few times this year, and every time I get to Maple where it turns to dirt, I see a different kind of bird strutting around in the middle of the road. The first time it was a flock of guinea hens. The second time it was regular hens with a rooster shepherding them across the road. This last time it was a peacock. What next, I wonder. An ostrich?

I rode up on a sandhill crane at holdridge the other day, it wouldn't move due the baby that was near by. Crazy how big these things are up close. It made some noise and puffed its wings up before running up the trail a ways then ducking into the pond. It had to be just shy of 5 feet.

Wowsers!!

was talkin with the maintainence guy over at the church on 16 & Schoenerr a couple years back
yep, right on the path next to freedom hill
he said he watched a large feline grab an adult canadian goose and run into the woods with it early one morning
he said it was about adult german shepard sized and definitely some type of cat
now that sure sounded like something similar to me
it was right around the time of a bunch of loose panther rumors
