Riding clipless pedals with street shoes?

Postby baldingboy » June 8th, 2012, 2:36 pm

Hey all,

I'm a college student who doesn't ride as much as I used to (just don't have as much time as I'd like) and so I've been trying to find a safer, easier way to ride my old clipless pedals with my street shoes.

I came across a product that is looking to get on the market currently, which you can also look at here: link removed by mod. I'm considering taking a pre-order on the product, but before I do, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a product like this already on the market? Have you had success/found them to be beneficial?

Thanks!

Winwood Decksters do exactly what you're looking for, and they are a product that already exists. I have a set that I bought a few years ago, used once or twice, and am no longer interested in. If you'd like them I'll sell them for $25 shipped (payable via PayPal). They are in great shape, I just don't have any use for them so they are sitting on the shelf.

Note that these are not a replacement for proper platforms, but they are good enough to clip on and ride up to the store, around the block, etc.

I have a platform thing that clips into SPD pedals that came with a bike I bought years ago. It's similar to what Consumer posted. One side of the pedal remains SPD while the other becomes platform. The thing is that the platform side is heavier so it naturally flips to the bottom making it a bit of a PITA. I like the way the Bikedabs have counteracted that.

My point is that the platform adaptors are fine for a short term solution, but they're going to bug the crap out of you pretty quick. I'd consider just swapping the pedals out. It's easy to do and will provide more stable pedaling.

Angie,

I take it you looked at the Bikedabs page; do you think that since they say they don't flip over like your platforms did, that they are worth the investment?

I didn't look at the cost, but it sounds like they're taking pre orders without any guarantee of product delivery so I personally would not go that route. I was suggesting replacing your clipless with a cheap pair of platforms pedals. Assuming you have a pedal wrench, it's easy to change pedals. If you're doing mostly casual riding it shouldn't be a big deal to put the clipless pedals back on for the occasional mtb ride. JMO.

The OP has been banned. He's actually an intern for funable.com and was shilling stuff by asking after it.
