Recent adventures at Burchfield

Postby TenSpeed » July 12th, 2010, 6:50 pm

My wife and I have been riding Burchfield, quite a bit lately to be honest. We have tried Anderson Park, but we just keep coming back to Burchfield. Some things that I have noticed.

Deer - they are out big time. I almost hit one coming around the blind corner on the trail just past Swamp Thing where the log is down along side the trail. Scared the crap out of me. Wasn't a big one, but it was still really close.

Lots of runners and hikers.

People that might not know exactly how the trails run. Spotted 2 riders that were heading up the long wide trail that loops back to the parking lot and runs parallel to the lot, after riding Swamp Thing. Is that trail just a one way? I ask because once you come down the hill, it merges pretty blindly and you get some decent speed coming down that hill. Had the 2 guys been about 20 seconds faster, we would have crashed.

Scratch that last part about the one way. Rode today with my wife, and I saw the sign that does say that it is one way. I was pretty sure that it was. I just had to make sure. Even with all of the rain that we got the other day, it wasn't too bad. A little muddy in some spots but nothing crazy. The bugs though, wow. They are unreal.

Last Sunday saw a spike, prolly about 8" with the velvet, just staring at me by the riverbend parking lot...I stopped and had a discussion with him. He feels that the new trails are weak and wants the old blocked off part reopened. I told him good luck with that. He snorted at me and walked off...

I too, would be in favor of re-opening the short part that connects Forest Hump(?) to the trail between Riverbend parking lot and the fishing dock. It would be nice to be able to get back to the parking lot without having to take the road to it after doing the ex-teeter-totter area. I don't see any downside to having it open - people could still continue on the new section towards the new bridge. Speaking of which, it is in better shape now. I rode it yesterday and somebody had done a lot of weed-whacking out there, making it much better, and faster to ride. THANKS to whoever did it!
