Commerce Township millage renewal August 5

Postby Spinwheel » March 1st, 2014, 6:12 pm

We have invited all the Commerce Twp Parks user groups to attend an informational meeting this Tuesday, March 2, 6:30 PM at the Commerce Twp Library. The purpose of the meeting is to educate, organize, and mobilize the township parks user base in preparation for the millage renewal this August. There will be several speakers providing information and support. We are asking for each user group to be represented. We hope that you and/or a representative of the Motor City Mountain Biking Association can be there to participate.

Thank you,

I've been asked to pass along the message...

To: To those who Enjoy Commerce Twp. Parks
On August 05, we need to pass the Renewal of the Commerce Millage for Park Improvements and Creation of Open Space.
The parkland we use for athletic activities is under the stewardship of our five athletics leagues and the Friends of Byers. While we contribute time and treasure to maintaining and improving the parks, the properties are owned by Commerce Township. It is easy to measure the direct benefits resulting from youth development and historic preservation and the benefits from the impacts of natural areas enjoyed by adjacent communities. But, we also gain a sense of place and quality of life that are difficult to define; but we know it when we see it!
These benefits translate into the stability of property values and access to essential amenities without a commercial look. Every 5 years, Commerce Township prepares its Parks & Rec. Master Plan to guide appropriate development of infrastructure and support facilities. During the past 10 years, because of the existing parks millage, we have been fortunate to acquire 600 acres of open space, to purchase much needed equipment and to provide key services to all the parks..
The recently completed 5-Year Master Plan (posted on the Commerce Twp. web site) describes all of the existing parkland and the future needs. These needs can only be met through the Renewal of the parks millage. The 0.4 mills translates to $25.00 per year, per $100,000.00 of taxable property value. We have all been doing this, let’s not stop!
Without the parks millage, the major infrastructure improvements will stop.
Please, vote “Yes” to the parks millage.
