Training Time

Postby breezer » February 16th, 2003, 8:04 pm

I have been haven an arguement with some fellow riders about riding rollers. They say that when you ride rollers for an hour it counts for 2hrs and 2hrs for 4hrs and so on. So however long you ride you double it and that is your training time. I disagree myself, I am just wondering what everyone else thinks.

Training time

I don't know about effort but the perceived time on the trainer is definitely longer than actual

Here's an observation. It's neither supports the claim, nor does it refute it.

One thing is for sure, on the road, you've got the "coast factor". You also have the advantage of the draft in a group.

You have neither on a trainer and you certainly can't coast on rollers for long enough to recover!

That really is entirely up to you. You can do some hard intervals, in a controlled situation, and get a serious work out, or take a nice easy recovery ride while watching the tube. Same thing when you ride your bike outside, you can go race pace or just take a "bike walk". Boy I'm starting to hate my gerbil wheel, but I'm getting sick of the cold too. C'mon spring!
I'm not a comlete idiot, some parts are missing.

Are you talking specifically rollers or trainers as well?

Really I think what matters is output. Or the cadence and resistance factors(power). It shouldn't matter if you are indoors or out or on a trainer or not.

if you want double your effort, find a spin class with spin bikes, and a coach that will encourage a hard work out. you'll get two hours work in one. (tried rollers, theres a big differance between rollers, spin bikes, and the real thing) REALS THE BEST! THINK SPRING

Roller time

Postby Joe_Yannie » March 3rd, 2003, 5:39 pm

I think what people like to think is this:
When you are on a trainer of some sort, there are no downhills, no stop signs/lights, and no drafting. An honest workout with a constant power output.

Problem with this is the lack of cooling. Your body tempurature is often higher inside, less heat exchange( no air cooling, like a bug's engine ), which can artificially raise your heartrate. Most fans don't have the muscle to move air much over 8mph, or move it over your entire body like riding outside does. So if you go by heartrate or PE you may not be working hard enough during base miles on a trainer. :~(

Amen on the Spin Class!!!! yikes At 6:45am!!! yikes. Seems I sweat more in 1 spin class than I ever could on rollers. I like rollers for developing better form and spin but not for developing fitness.
