MICA?

Postby Steve_Kinley » April 1st, 2010, 11:50 am

OK, now that we have announced ourselves who are we and what are we planning? And what is MICA, some kind of mineral?

True, mica is a mineral, but MICA stands for Michigan Interscholastic Cycling Association. As part of the Michigan Mountain Biking Association, our mission is to bring the sport of cycling to the middle and high schools of Michigan.
We have begun working with a group of current scholastic cycling club advisers to develop an information kit for schools that wish to develop their own cycling clubs. We hope to have some preliminary materials available in May.

We are also developing an interscholastic mountain bike racing program that will run in the fall. While still in the planning stages, we intend to use races already on the race calendar and others offered specifically for MICA participants.

This forum as well as a yet to be developed website will be updated with the latest happenings and progress as they occur. Future development also includes Face Book and Twitter accounts.
Inquiries can be made using the mica@mmba.org mailing address.

I presume that since the name is Michigan Interscholastic Cycling Association we will be promoting all forms of competitive cycling? ( i.e Mountain biking, Road and maybe cyclocross?)

I will be contacting the Troy High Atletic director and wanted to be clear if I am asked which forms of cycling would MICA promote.

Thanks

Yes, MICA will be supporting all types of cycling at the scholastic level, including recreation and competition. Our initial efforts on the competitive front will focus on mountain biking. While we will be supporting competition and a scholastic racing league, we do not plan to put on races ourselves. We will try to use existing promoters, chapters and schools to host and manage the races.

We have changed our name to the Michigan Scholastic Cycling Association, MiSCA, to avoid confusion with the national organization, NICA. The name change also better reflects our mission of working with schools to establish all types of cycling clubs and not solely focusing on competition. We are working to change our logo and web to reflect the new identity.
