Women Only MTB Race

Postby Steve_Kinley » September 19th, 2010, 7:40 am

If you didn't see the postings in the race section, LOHS will be hosting a race for Women only on October 3. Simply sign up for the number of laps you wish to race; one, two, or three. Laps are about 6.5 miles each and are a mix of technical singletrack, open two track, and Bald Mountain South. Proceeds benefit MICA and the LO after school programs. http://www.bikereg.com/events/register. ... ntid=11291

I'm pleasantly surprised there's enough demand for a ladies only race. Do you mind if I ask why though? Since these are fundraising events for MICA, I don't see why you'd limit it to ladies only. Or is the point to drum up female participation in order to show the young ladies that we not-as-young gals can still kick butt?

Originally this was going to be a students only race day but after reading various threads about women and racing I thought we would extend the race day and offer races for women only. We may be lucky to get 10 women total but it's not about the $$. I just figured we could try something different to get more women involved. We have other races for everyone such as the race on October 23. http://www.bikereg.com/events/register. ... ntid=10074

That makes sense. I hope to be there on the 3rd with my elementary racer wannabe

Cool, maybe this will be a day where the students race first and then follow their moms around to make sure they are OK

Is this open to all ages? Little women, older cougars like me? I want to bring the girls, and their high school friends!

It doesn't matter what age. The first set of races are for what we call JV and Varsity students, or the equivalent of Beginner and Sport, but 18 and under. These races start at 10:00. At noon we have races for middle school and elementary students.

Then at 1:00 it is open to any female, any age. Classes are simply one, two, or three laps. We will not have the traditional categories for this race. Just enter for the distance you want to race. Note that we have reduced entry fees for the youngest classes and those racing fewer laps.

Yes, and the irregular singletrack as well :D We cut out a majority of the singletrack for the elementary and middle school students but all other classes run the entire course with the exception of one piece of singletrack we eliminate for everyone.

The attached photo shows the course. Everyone starts behind the school and the course runs clockwise. Elementary and middle school racers cut off at the green arrow. All other classes proceed to the NW sections. Everyone skips the section marked with an orange X.

The course is in great shape this afternoon. No mud and very fast. I put down orange paint at all the intersections where there might be a question. You can start behind the school and follow the arrows or at the upper parking lot and follow the worn in trail. Get out and ride it! Don't forget that preregistration ends tomorrow night.

Got all the singletrack cleared of leaves today to help define the trail and hopefully aid in drying it. In spite of all the rain no standing water or mud holes, solid ground underneath. But parts of the trail are very slick. We may shorten the course and/or the number of laps depending on additional rain.

OK women, where were you? Not a single one came out to race this afternoon. The trail was in really good shape and other than the wind, once you were on you bike it was nice weather for racing.

I figured the trail would be sloppy after all the rain so I opted for a rail to trail ride. Shari punished me soundly. My legs are still aching from trying to keep up with her.

See you Wednesday for the short track race. I plan to bring the CX bike so be gentle with the single track routing, ok? ;)
