I deleted Guppie's last post, simply because dragging issues that occurred in another thread does nothing but drag this thread further off topic. There was nothing wrong with his post other then it was too off topic for this thread.

Guppie wrote:You're assuming I never did a trail day. That's a big assumption to make. I am also on the committee that does the State Games race so I know what the MMBA does. I just don't know all the side stuff that one can read about in the Advocacy, MMBA News, and Volunteers Needed forums. I don't read about them because these forums. I believe a few other people said the same thing here. Some of the posters who do nothing but try to start arguments are not even MMBA members, yet a new comer may not know that. So they read all the *beep* matches and go away. I refer people to the MMBA all the time, but I tell them the forums are useless (trail condition forum is really good).

I come here to get the race schedule and check the day before a race to see if it's on. Otherwise I only venture here when I'm bored. If I have serious biking questions (mtb, road, tri) I'll go to other forums where people are treated with more respect and you can get honest answers to questions, without having to deal with the immaturity of some of the posters here. There really is no 'fix' to the issue with forums. It's just the culture.

My response was based on your earlier statement...

Guppie wrote:Personally, I really know nothing of the MMBA, and that's mainly because of these forums.
If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

I was providing an example of what's wrong with this forum. Reminds me of American Eagle store. I submitted three product reviews. One positive and two not positive. They accepted the good one and rejected the two bad ones. Much the same mentality here. Whatever.

You do realize that the forum is a collection of people saying what they say, right? It's not the voice of the MMBA as a whole.

Yes, but it's the 'face' of the MMBA. Where most of the interaction is so the image of MMBA is tarnished by the culture of the forums. I know others feel the same way. When I started racing and really interacting with other mountain bikers, I was amazed how many of them don't go to the forums, not even the 'racing' section. Now I'm one of those racers saying that to other new racers. Don't go to the forums. All makes sense now.

I'm not saying you can't complain, but doing it here contributes to the very noise-to-signal ratio that you are complaining about. Start a separate thread.

No. The face of the MMBA is the work the MMBA does as a whole to keep you and me and every other Tom, *beep* and Harriet on the trails. Many, many well kept and constantly improving trails. The forum is a place for MMBA members AND NON MMBA members to chime in about all things cycling. Some of it helpful, some of it pointless, lots of it just page filler. But coming on here is a choice, yours in fact. You can choose to chime in, not chime in, read some threads, maybe get some helpful info, or toss a hissy fit at another faceless forum member over the most contrite and insignificant issues. It happens, it's called the internet. I find the forum is governed fairly, yet continues to have its struggles, that's for sure. It's to be expected. Cycling is open to all makes and models and ways of being and thinking. But to make a broad assumption about an organization purely off of the e-chatter and not by the ACTUAL work done to keep you on your trails year after year, well that's just ignorant, plain and simple.
