Trail Improvement opportunity at Proud Lake

Postby WishIcouldcatchmybreath » May 4th, 2011, 9:28 pm

There are several low spots on the trail that are wet most of the year:
1) the beginning of loop 1 - about 50 yards off of Garden Rd
2) on the connector trail between the Garden Rd trail head, and the railroad tracks, at the bottom of the hill from which loop 2 starts
3) at the start of loop 3 (near the RR crossing)

The park really doesn't have the resources to do anything about this. It would be good gesture on the part of our user group to purchase some limestone fill, and shore up these sections. Although I haven't discussed this specifically with the DNR (I would be willing to do so), this type of thing has been done in the past by other user groups (specifically the equestrians), and shouldn't be a problem.

We've done this at other metro south trails... bought limestone and distributed it (or bought wood and built bridges/boardwalks) where re-routes weren't practical or available.

This is exactly the kind of coordinated trail work that a trail coordinator coordinates. All they need to do is come up with a plan, run it past the land manager, get approval, ask the chapter for money, have the material delivered, and schedule a trail day.

This is a good idea and much needed.

Have you approached the TC's about this ?

What do they say?

IS there any opportunity to move the trail to higher ground in those areas. Sometimes better solution is to look for re-route options that will hold up better and need far less maintenance and $$ in the log run. But this said some times there are no other options.
