Best picture from the trail?

Postby LSKennedy » January 19th, 2012, 12:52 pm

Hey there,

I saw this on a forum about gaming, except it was screenshots, and decided to start one of trail riding!

So, what's your best picture? Or favorite?

Just riding in a park close to my house, and I snapped this bad boy. I really like it, I know it's full of lens flare and what not, but it sure is perdy.

LSKennedy, it can be a tough crowd here! :D
Here's a beginner tip: Kickstands, reflectors and that weird plastic "disk" behind the cassette on the rear wheel are all considered cheesy and therefore must be removed from a bike.

I learned this lesson about the reflectors when a friend was helping me build a 29er and he simply broke them off without asking me, as if he was saying, "I will never go on a ride with you if you have these on your bike."

Anyways, I think reflectors give you a false sense of security when riding in the dark. A headlight and tail light are much more visible and much safer. Great photo, BTW.

Well, this one's not mine, and it's from a race (2012 Farmers Fat Bike Race) rather than a trail ride, but I like it. :D

I do have lights! hahah, I just never took off the reflectors, didn't know people seemingly looked down on others for it. My rear one broke off last year, because my light took it out hahah.

As far as the kickstand...

And about gaming, I'm also big into PC gaming as well as console yadda yadda. I used to go to Tournaments up at MSU, and the club has a forum.

Thank you btw!

From your previous posts, I understand you want to get into touring. I wouldn't recommend using a kickstand on a heavily loaded touring bike for the following reasons:
1. It can sink into soft soil due to the weight of the bike, causing the bike to topple over.
2. A standard kickstand can be damaged since they typically aren't designed for the heavy loads of a touring bike.
3. Kickstand have actually been known to damage certain bike frames. Here's a tech bulletin from Surly about it.

For touring, I recommend leaning the bike on something solid, such as a tree, with a reusable wire tie (or velcro strap) around the front brake lever to keep the bike from moving on its own.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Kickstands also aren't cool. :)

I think the real issue with kick stands is that they tend to come down and be troublesome at inopportune times, such as when bunnyhopping over a log or navigating through a rock garden.

Lots of favorite pictures, but came to mind to me this morning, reminding me of a great experience at Copper Harbor...

That copper harbor one is straight beauty. Like, I want to pack up and go right now!

Luckily, mine hasn't come down at any inopportune moments, but I know that's not to say it won't. I don't know, for now it's definitely convenient. You bring up a great point with the panniers though.

I was jealous when you said you were moving there. I didn't know your riding buddies looked better than mine! Glad you are enjoying one of the best riding areas in the counrty.
