Since you are in Lake Orion I would suggest you give these races a try as a low cost, low key introduction to racing.

Could someone explain the short track events to me? How are they differant from regular mtb races.....I understand the TT race format. Also an STX race....?

Not sure if you are familiar with cyclocross but if you are, picture a similar type course but without barriers :D If you are not familiar, the course will be much shorter in length than a normal XC, probably close to 1.5-2 miles long and less technical, meaning little to no singletrack is used and the course can usually be ridden on a cyclocross or mountain bike. But it also means that the races are higher in intensity, albeit shorter in duration. Because of the shorter course length most races will be 5 or more laps so they are also fun for spectators. STX is sometimes used as an abbreviation for short track.
