A Fine Mess......

Went sailing on Higgins Lake this past weekend and got some heavy air practice in for the upcoming Centrals Regional and North American Championship Regattas...... looks like I need a bit more practice.

I think that is the bike equivalent to "I was just riding along..."

That was a fine mess. Glad to see you came out O.K. The vessel didn't look like it fared as well.

I see a potential sponsorship from Nike. nice job flashing the swoosh right before bailing. How fast were you going?

Hope the boat recovers quickly and cheaply.
If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Speed was probably around 50 give or take a few. Hard to say. Wind was honking but the snow was offering considerable drag. The hull will go back together piece by piece with new top and bottom skins. Sort of like glueing a broken egg back together a few pieces at a time. I have another hull from a friend in TC to use in the mean time. A few bruises on the right quad and hip from where this old Clydesdale went through the sidewall. As near as I can tell I hit something with the front runner or dropped it in a crack while I was in the last hike. Gluing starts tomorrow.

I know a fine carpenter, but his boat building skills are a little questionable. He tends to be a patch and go race kind of guy who doesn't much care about looks when it comes to racing boat.

Man, that's a bummer. Glad you're OK.

A few friends and I were out sailing my dad's DN on Cass Lake last winter... we were the only ones out there besides a few snowmobiles and four-wheelers despite great sailing conditions (15 to 20mph wind, little snow cover). When my friend Dave was on the opposite side of the lake from where the rest of us were watching, the plank snapped on the upwind side of the hull. As the mast went down, the shroud flung the broken piece of plank (with steel runner attached) right in front of his face before the boat spun out. He was lucky he didn't catch the runner with the side of his head or get tangled in the shroud. It was not fun walking over a mile across the ice to pick up the pieces and carry them home.

We finally got a new plank for the DN in December, but haven't had any ice to sail on locally
I'm just here to ride...

Thanks for posting! I shared it with Sailing Anarchy. Maybe will make the Front Page. I know the glue gurus in Bay City pretty well if you need anything. Glad you are OK and the boat can be put back together relatively quickly. And why sail slow when you can sail fast. All the best in your upcoming races, and if Gretchen is taking the pics, give her a Hey! from me.

Thanks and will do. I restocked yesterday on Gouge. Enough to glue the boat back together as well as build up a few more runners.
