Pure Pigeon Mountain Bike Ride/Race Date Picked

Postby Red Tail Adventures » February 14th, 2012, 7:35 am

May 12th, Here is the deal. To hold a race we need a event permit which could restrict the number of bikes going over Rattlesnake Mt. because of causing potential erosion problems. To hold a fast ride we would not need a permit. At this time I have local DNR personal offering to look at ways to reroute part of the high country pathway over Rattlesnake Mt. The high country pathway was not built years ago with mountain bikes in mind, but more so for hiking. To open up the door for the DNR to work with MMBA and IMBA in the Pigeon River Country would be a BIG step in developing new mountain bike single track. Showing riders the potential of Baldy and Pine Mt. areas along with the Camp Eight Ridge system would help to lobby the cause. DNR personal are offering ways to route this ride/race. Depending where we start it would be between 35 to 50 miles, with over 3000 ft. of climbing and descent.
"Pure Pigeon" could become one of the more challenging races in the Great Lakes Region. Putting on a fast ride this year with some of Michigan,s better mountain bikers would expose people to hills in the Pigeon River Country that many people other wise would never ride.
I need some feed back on "Pure Pigeon", is it worth pursuing with all the other races popping up on the calender? Or could "Pure Pigeon" turn into one big can of Whoop Tail? Lets hear your thoughts?

You've got my interest! I'm not familar with the "pure pigeon" area. But I like the idea of a long challanging race/ride. With the sucsess of the MMM and their record sell-out this year, you could really be on to something.

With all the races already on the calender, I think a "timed ride" might be well recieved. I would suggest keeping the climbing as high as possible... with Michigan being a "flat" state a massive amount of vertical seems to be a big draw.

I'd say go for it! And keep us posted.

Do it.
Haven't ridden that area yet.
Always wanted to.
Race would put a stake in my calendar of a must do.

Agree try to get as much vertical as possible to make it different.
Use it all as best you can within trail building guidelines.

Sounds like fun! I'd be in if it is a timed ride since I am a FOBS (Fat Old Bald Slow). If I remember right, a nice place to ride. Keep the wheels rollin' on this.
