High Country Pathway Spring work days

Greetings!

It may still be cold out, but it's time to start planning for spring and the clean up needed to keep a 80 mile loop open.

Saturday April 28th we'll be starting on the Vanderbilt side and staying in the historic staff house located on Twin lakes Road next to the park headquarters. From here we'll work on clearing the west sides of the trail.

Saturday May 12th we'll be starting from and camping at Clear lake and working the east side of the trail system.

What should you bring?

If you plan on doing an overnight, any camping gear you would typically need for both clear lake and the staff house. We'll feed you dinner/lunch and provide snacks for while you are out on the trail. Bikes are the preferred method of travel on this trail to help cover lots of ground. Loppers, backpacks for tools and supplies, and safety glasses also a good idea. And of course bring what ever you would typically need for a few hour excursion through the woods.

If you are not overnighting it and driving in the morning of, we'll be starting at 9:00 AM on both days.

If I recall correctly, one time Dan, Joe and myself were out for almost 12 hours, including riding the dirt roads back to Pigeon Bridge from Osmun.
Usually it's between 4 and 7 hours, depending on the day and the crews.

I'll do my best to be at one (possibly both) of those days.

Perfect trail work dates for me. They avoid the Bike Demo date at ILRA and my annual wind-safari trip to Cape Hatteras. I got'em marked on the calendar .

With the light winter I'm hoping for the best when it comes to trail clearing, but you never know what you'll find.

Sometimes I think we should just re-name the whole thing to Falling Timbers.

Just an FYI, it's going to be bad this year, we had 12" to 20" of heavy slush fall across the region from the northwest to Alpena. It brought down trees and branches everywhere so every last bit of help will be huge. Hopefully we'll be able to pack enough gas and oil!

You can borrow mine. I never use it. It's compact but I prefer the handsaw. Just seems like less effort.

Ill give it a try, Its got to be better than trying to haul my rancher 455 around..I also talked to another musher from the Atlanta area he said they got about a foot snow. But he didn't see as many tree's down as he saw in Kalkaska. So hope for the best but I can tell you we pulled 100 trees off our dogsled trail {about 15 miles}. Almost all pines a few big ones but most the size of a ball bat or smaller.

FYI, it's been pointed out to me that Mothers Day is the 13th of May potentially interfering with the May 12th date. Please let me know if April 14th or May 26th options work better.
