earliest start of season?

Postby CM » March 20th, 2012, 9:49 am

First ride out at ILRA Sunday. Trail's in amazingly good shape, rider--not so much. But I was wondering if anyone can remember the trails being rideable this early. I mean, it was still late winter!
Chocolate is the answer. The question is pretty much irrelevant.

Earliest that I can remember. I got three rides in last week and one this week, and all four rides have been on dry, un-frozen dirt (and left-over leaves from the fall). Pretty awesome.
I'm just here to ride...

Seeing as we we may get a 3 week stint of freezing weather and blizzards in early May this year, no this may be the latest start of the riding season. This is just midwinter break.

This is from a post I made earlier this year. I'm sure the dates for ILRA would be close to these.

KLydesdale wrote:Last year I put together a list of the dates that "PLRA is Ready To Go" posts were made over the last several years. Here it is as copied from the post I made back then:

2004: March 28
2005: April 3
2006: March 17
2007: March 25
2008: April 5
2009: March 28
2010: March 19

In 2002 I started riding on "real" dirt at PLRA during the first week of March. That winter was significantly warmer than normal so things just didn't freeze as deeply.

This doesn't absolutely mean we won't get any more snow or nasty winter weather. On April 24 2005 there was about 5-6" of snow on the ground at PLRA. The temps had been in the 80's earlier that week.

This is the year that my wife and I got married. We remember, because on Saturday, April 9, 2005, it was 72, and later that month, I remember shoveling the driveway, cursing the state, and asking myself why I wasn't still in Las Vegas on the honeymoon.

They are talking about riding on soft dirt. Not the hard as concrete variety. Though this winter it never
did get rock hard and stay that way.

Yeah, but what was the earliest you were able to ride on thawed-out, dried out trails after each of those winters for any or all of those 20 years? That's the topic here - the season that starts AFTER the spring thaw. Not how much you ride during the winter.

I would love this if it were to happen.

So would I!

But it wouldn't be a "downer" to me if we did have a major snowstorm in the next month or so. I'd just do the same thing I always do when that happens... Go play in it!
