open links open in a new window

Postby davedejonge » April 3rd, 2012, 12:25 pm

Know, I know I can right click a link that has been posted in a thread to "open in a new window"
but I was wondering if there is a default setting so that links posed in the forum will open in a new tab/window.
I looked for one in the user ctrl panel, but didn't see one. I think that in other forums I visit this is the case.

It's not a per-user option, and a while ago we decided to leave it as it is for the whole of the site, because it removes the option of not using it from users.

As a suggestion, click with your mouse wheel instead and you'll open the link in a new tab/window.

Yes, just because 97% of all forum-like sites out there use that default behavior is no reason for this site to behave as you'd expect.

By using target="_blank" all external links always get opened in a new tab or window. There is no way for users to not open then in a new tab or window without using something like Greasemonkey to dynamically rewrite parts of the site. With not specifying a target (as we do) links will open as proper links do, and via middle-click(or ctrl/cmd-click) users can optionally open them in new windows/tabs.

Another convenient way to get the "_blank" behavior is to click the link while holding down the ctrl key. Also, clicking while holding the shift key opens a new window.

Edit: Sorry c0nsumer. Need to learn to read posts in their entirety before replying :-/

Eh, kinda... I do remember us all discussing it around the time of this conversation and back when the move to phpBB3 first happened. I believe you concurred here.

Somewhat unrelated, why are the two links above formatted differently? Underlined vs. not underlined. Not really that important, just curious :D

You probably clicked on the last, then hit back, then the first, then hit back. It's whether or not they are visited as per that current page render. Reload the page and they both (if visited) will likely no longer be underlined.

You aren't able to recognized someone giving 'the party line' on an issue. Because, I was, am and always will be someone who believes that links should open in new tabs. I was repeating the reasoning for the group decision, although I was a dissenting opinion on it when the decision was made.

I guess not. I thought what you said really was your opinion.

That really wasn't him concurring so much as differing with Di. Just as above he differed with you. It seems to be his nature to differ, facts notwithstanding, apparently.

In any case, this website seems to buck the trend of expected behavior of virtually all other websites. Most other websites seem to have figured out that users might "lose their place" on the current website when visiting other websites in the same tab. As this is somewhat undesirable from a user's perspective, they utilize them new-fangled tab things that all the new browsers have. But not here (and likely, amish.com)!

In every offline discussion we had about this, I disagreed with it. Granted, it's a matter of opinion, but you didn't change my opinion. I just realized it wasn't worth further discussion, because you weren't going to change my opinion, and me yours.

That was my, in my role as one of the webmasters, stating "It was done because of this and that", without stating that I agreed with that stance.
