Go for the clips.

You haven't gone over the bars with your feet clipped in yet, have you?

I thought that you weren't supposed to do that, is it a new trick?... :)

not yet, my time will come I am sure.

Are you sure, Dave? I think you are only the 2nd person i've ever seen do this on an UP-hill.

To the OP, enjoy the challenges, there are plenty of great trails around to keep 'growing into' as you progress as a rider. And even then, as somebody mentioned, you will find new ways to challenge yourself.

Don't worry about when you get that urge to want to buy a new bike and/or change the fit and/or 'upgrade' components about a million times during the season. Many who have been riding a long time are constantly chasing that 'perfect' set-up. The more you ride, the more finicky you will become for a lot of reasons.

Been over the bars a few times clipped-in and was ok. You just bring the bike along for the ride. All were from pedal strikes. One time I did a half flip and landed on my back still clipped and holding the bars with bike above me. Pedal strike flips happen real fast.

Im adjusting quickly. My old school BMX days are coming back and I am used to the flats again. I will however get better pedals than the stock ones on the Carve arent the greatest. Any suggestions?

I have some Diamondback platforms with a concave design and replaceable pins. They seem to work very well.
