Shop Recomendation to Replace Suspension Pivot Bearings

Postby M3 » April 25th, 2012, 9:20 pm

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a bike shops in the Macomb/Oakland county area that will remove and replace suspension pivot bearings. Specifically the chain and seat stay bearings on a 07 stumpjumper. I've tried every homebrew method to get the bearings out of the seat stays and can't get them to budge. I'm hoping a real bearing puller can do the job. For some reason I decided to check out the bearings AFTER I waited a month to have rear shock and brain rebuilt! :x

If you have no luck locally then I know a shop that can do it. Central Park Bicycles in Okemos has the full FSR bearing replacemnet tool kits that will do the job right. Maybe as a last resort but just in case.

Fraser Bicycle and Fitness is a good Specialized dealer in the area, as is Main Street Bikes. I don't know what their tech capabilities are, but being Specialized shops I'd imagine they can do it.

Yes, the BFH is always the final answer. :icon_thumleft:

I pressed out the bearings of my old Spec FSR with a 10-inch C-clamp and Craftsman sockets of various sizes. One that's exactly the size of the bearing to push, and a slightly larger one on the other side to catch. I'm assuming you've already tried that?

And honestly, if the bearings are actually pressed in, then a BFH could very easily cause more problems than it solves.

Fraser Bicycle & Fitness can take care of that for you. They have the equipment and techs to handle it.

Shush you! Like alcohol and duct tape, the BFH is the solution to all problems.

Thanks for the replies. I've been trying to stay away from the BFH so I don't destroy anything. I'll give fraser a call today. I tried a LBS near my house and the quoted me $200 for the bearings and labor. I about s@!t Myself! I have a feeling I'll be going at it again tonight with the vise and sockets.

Try gently heating up the frame ( carefull not to mess the paint) around the bearing and putting ice on the bearing itself to use physics to your favor. I put my new headset bearings/ races / whatever/ in the freezer in august and kept the frame outside in the heat. They slid together with very minimal motivation when I tried to put them together.

Thanks for the Fraser referrals. They were much more inline with what I was expecting price wise.

Free Heel and Wheel would be able to help you out. They aren't suspension specialist or anything, but they are located in west Yellowstone, which would give you a half ass reason to go to Yellowstone national park.
