Youre *beep* kidding right, is there still a way to get to that climb? Who did this reroute and why? Do they want the whole trail straight and flat?

No...not kidding.

I think the reason for the re-route may have had more to do with the descent after the climb, vs the climb itself. The current descent was a re-route a few years back....but it has eroded pretty badly....the first right hander developes a tremendous amount of sand in the summer months, and due to it being a sharp corner with a tree to dodge at the entrance, it claims victims frequently.

The reroute may add a little legnth to the course....it comes in at the bottom of the current descent, at the exit of the final left hander in the pines.

It is what it is....the TC has a tall order in trying to please everyone

Please everyone. :? I dont remember the last time they added something that made the trail more challenging. Just another trail that will eventually become flat. If blaming it on erosion makes you feel better.....

Actually two of the more recent reroutes added technical trail (pine section with 1+ miles to go, right after "old piney" & the entrance to the second switchback-pine section). These new reroutes added legnth and took away wide, short, straight down hills. Who knows...maybe this reroute will be fun too???

Sorry, i meant the climb, I know it wasent long but it was fun and theres only so many technical climbs. I dont understand they just put in those blocks of concrete to make it easier for the average rider and now they just totally elimate it, and right before the race to. And you wonder why some of us always complain about dumbing down the trail. I hope the tc didnt take the easy way out to reroute. I guess Ill find out sunday.

FWIW, I don't think those concrete blocks were done by the TC or the WMMBA. They like to do re-routes before the race because that is when the trail day is scheduled and having 1000 people ride over the new trail helps to pack it down really quickly.

The longer, switchbacked descents they've used in several places to replace straight sandy/eroded plunges, are at least as technical and definitely more fun than the old route.

Complaining about your fellow rider's volunteer work is pretty low--if you want to have input on the work that's done, show up and lend a hand.

Griping about it here is divisive, and does nothing but inflame tempers, and devalue the efforts of MMBA volunteers.

If you don't like Yankee don't go there and ride it. Problem solved.

Rain is a good thing for Yankee due to the sandy soil conditions that exist out there so it should be good to go!!!

I bet if there is no rain today, you will have no idea it rained out there yesterday. I bit of moisture makes the trail fantastic. Look at last weekends posts about the course, people commenting that the conditions Sunday were the best in a long time, and it rained all Saturday night.

No worries!

Hit Yankee up for the first time this season. The trail was in great shape and fast today. While I miss the challenge of the step-ups at the mile 10 reroute, the new trail that replaced that section was really fun and nicely designed. This is the subject of great debate on my side of the state - that reroutes always seem to be easier or worse than the previous trail. The new section at Yankee is proof that a reroute can improve a trail, not take away from it. Kudos to the guys that laid it out and cut it in. Nice work!

Hi, I'm from Chicago and was planning to hit Yankee Springs tomorrow (Sunday May 13th) and Fort Custer on Monday (will camp in the area). Anyone can tell me how are these trails after big rain like today? I've heard they drain fast and it's OK to ride them after the rain most of the time. You guys think riding Yankees around noon tomorrow would be OK? I would not want to damage trails but I'm hoping I can make a trip. Thanks!

Trails will be fine, Yankee will be better with rain than without.

How much of this trail is sandy? A group of us are going for the first time on Friday and I'm wondering if I'd be better off on my 26" mtb or my fatbike? The last page or so of posts make it seem a lot sandier than the description in the trail guide.

Either or. Or possibly...bring both? Do a lap with the 26" and then a lap with the fatbike and you decide :D
