It's not your strength or skill. It's your level of commitment.

Holy 42-teeth shark! Seems cool though. I wonder how thin a bike chain can really get? Haha.

I don't like the trend towards increasingly large cogs in the back. Does anyone else not like adding weight skewed all the way to the rear of the bike like that?

OTOH, the ability to run a 10-speed cog is nice. I like this idea of "micro drive" from the world of BMX. I realize the increased potential for wear, but I like the look of micro drive enough to maybe overlook the increased wear. Plus, as gears go smaller, you save weight rather than add it.

The most interesting part of that article is the supposed chairing in the front that doesn't need a guide. That's huge for they 1x crowd.

Have to disagree with this assertion, if they indeed use a 42 tooth large cog. It is that way right *now*, if running 1x9, or to a lesser degree with 1x10. A rider must make a choice between top end that can handle super fast downhills and roads, or a low end that is palatable on the steepest climbs the sport has to offer. With a 42 tooth cog in back? That cog would allow a rider to utilize a substantial chainring in front, without losing a good granny ratio.

This would put 1x within the range of most riders, including semi-fit weekend warriors IMO.

I do wonder about the weight bias toward the rear. I currently run 1x9, with a rigid fork, and freeride spec parts in the rear. The bias is very noticeable when lifting the bike off the rack. It feels like there is a brick in back, but I don't know that it bothers my riding in any tangible fashion. Even a slight adjustment in body position will more than compensate for a few gram shift fore to aft. It also makes it easier to unweight the front of the bike for drops, downhills, and rough terrain, which is useful on just about every trail, anywhere.

Ya, the tooth profile on the chainring is really out of the box. If it works then that is a game changer. The mention of different gearing options is good too. Maybe not 42 but 40 or 38. I'm thinking why not change options on the 10 speed? Maybe a 38. I like 1X10 with 11-38. I don't mind the gap in ratios because I'm not anal about cadence.

Good point. I would like to try such a ring on my current 1x bikes.

Actually, it's been designed to run with a 10 speed chain. The cogs are spaced the same as a 10 speed cassette, but It will require a different freehub body/driveshell, as the smallest cog that can be accommodated currently is 11-tooth, and the 11 speed cassette is either 9 or 10 tooth at the small end. Kind of like micro-drive that you see on BMX/dirt jump bikes.

I confused why they say you have to be in crazy good shape? I ride an SS, and have for a few years, whether or not I am in great shape. I feel like most people could ride a 1x9 or 1x10 easily.

Don't know if you heard, but this Michigan Terrain Biking thing has caught on in other parts of the world! terrain with mountains ;-)

But, I hear you, I recently switched to a 1x9 with 36 front ring and haven't really come across any problems at all. Later this summer though I will be bringing the rig to the mountains. We'll see how my setup works on sustained climbs.

You would still need a guide on the front. No way would that stay on.

This is just stupid. What's the benefit? Many pros race on 1x10 now. They don't need a 42 in the back.

Also 11 speed chains??? I give up. There's been a marked change in performance as drivetrains have evolved from 8 to 9 to 10 speed. As the chains have narrowed smooth shifting in poor conditions (wet, muddy, dirty) has gotten worse and worse. SRAM top end components in particular have become particularly bad in this regard.

The only reason to push mtb drivetrains toward 11sp like this is to get people to buy more garbage.

I think Scotty's point is they say it's "to help our athletes win races", but I also question if racers need the low gear and want the weight on the rear wheel...
