QR skewers

I like the DT Swiss RWS skewers. I have them on my cross bike and as the thru-bolt design on my MTB. So far, so good. I've also used the Salsa skewers, and they do the job as well.

+1 for La Nain Rouge! Must appease the little guy or disaster will strike.

"No, the ground."

I don't know if i've just been lucky but I've never seen a properly tightened skewer come loose in countless thousands and thousands of miles of road and MTB riding. I use a tray style bike rack so I'm not re-tightening them after each ride. So they can go long periods of time without me checking them. I've probably gone entire seasons without pulling my front wheel off.

I think part of the problem may be just how subjective it is on how tight they should be. I've seen a lot of people who have them pretty loose. It should take some force to flip the skewer closed.

Now I'm sure I just jinxed myself and I'll probably have both wheels fall out of the drop outs at the exact same time on a 45+ MPH road downhill.

This was brought up a couple of years ago. It turns out that disc brakes are the culprit.
Do a little searching and I think you will find credible stories to this end.
It happened to me right after I went to disc brakes.
The end result for me is to "crank them down". (Never had to do more than snug them with rim brakes)

Pete.

I have the RWS Thru-bolt skewers on my bike and they are great. No problems for me either, but I didn't have problems with my XTR skewers either. Though, I didn't have disc brakes then either.

I'd love to get a pair of the DT Swiss ones, they are just really expensive if they don't come with your hubs.

Yep I think that's often the problem. I go as tight as I can within reason. Also need to be careful to make sure the wheel is seated all the way down. Never had an issue.

QR skewers

Postby Bento » June 6th, 2012, 11:04 pm

I returned a set of Hope skewers years back. They kept coming loose, IMHO. Relplaced them with used Shimano skewers. Come to find out they are generally considered the best. Next is perhaps the Salsa which is the most prevalent in my fleet. I am sure the DT Swiss are great too. If I could swing it cheaply, all my forks would be 15mm and the rear would be "Fun Bolts".

Yeah. I have one set. Fantastic skewers. But they are highway robbery if you buy them stand-alone.

I have the DT Swiss on my bike and I've had them come loose before. If I tighten them too much, they slow my front wheel down. Too loose and the wheel will come loose. I've found the sweet spot now but it took a while.

I am deciding between Salsa skewers and Shimano XT, I found the Salsa online for $40 and the XT skewers for a little bit more so I just have to decide between the 2.

If my fork didn't have the safety lip I would have lost the wheel. It was installed all the way and was straight. I am thinking it is a mixture of disk brakes and a bike carrier that doesn't support the wheels.

I never do a once over on my bike before I ride, I guess I should get into that habit.

I know this is an old thread and I replied to it but I was referring to the front skewer. I have a problem with my bike where my rear skewer comes loose. It's happened on a few separate occasions with the last time costing me my face at Grampian when my wheel came out and I went flying. Has anyone used the DT Swiss RWS rear skewer? Not the 10mm but the regular style one? I am really hoping this fixes the problem on my bike. After the accident I really don't even want to ride that bike right now. Usually the skewer would come loose on a downhill under heavy braking and it was a slight downhill but I turned left and then started to turn right and the bike just stopped. I was thinking it was rider error but then found out my rear wheel had to be put back on by someone that stopped.

this happens to me with my CX bike on my trainer. I mount up the bike with a tight skewer, ride it even once, and then when I pull the bike off the back wheel drops out without fail. so wierd. the rims have cartridge bearings and I it don't think I'm crushing them between the trainer mounts...
in it to ride, not to accessorize.

3d,
Take a close look when you load your bike into the trainer. If you have the type of skewers with a hard rubber friction surface, that rubber might be compressed when you crank the trainer tight. Most ball bearings are angle contact and will not compress. You cannot mash angle contact bearings, and if you did the wheel would not turn.
Try a XT skewer.
