Lightweight 2.3-2.4" tires and light wide rims

Postby Laser4G63 » June 22nd, 2012, 8:56 am

Couple questions here. First, is there a lightweight (~600g), fast rolling, true 2.3-2.4" x 26" mountain bike tire? I am currently running Wolverine 2.2" tires and like them. I just want to try a wider, higher volume tire to see how it feels. I was looking at the WTB Mutano 2.4, which is 602g for the race version, but wondered if it's a true 2.4" tire.

Second, is there a lightweight (~400g), wide rim? Not sure on the width I am looking for. I currently have DT Swiss XR 4.1d rims and the inside width is 17mm (I think). Even with the Wolverines I should be using a wider rim, but I will definitely need them for an even wider tire.

Let me know any ideas you have. Thanks.

26 or 29? Yeah beware. A couple years ago I bought some weight weenie 450g 26 tires claimed were 2.0, but they LIED and they were probably 1.5 super low volume and I HATED them!

American Classic makes a wider ridiculous light wheel. Its their "Mountain" wheel.

Racing 2.4 are about 640g and a true 2.4 tire.

I own both and give them 5 stars.

EDIT: I assumed you were talking 29rs before you added the correct size.

Racing Ralph 2.4. However, this is on a very wide Velocity P35 rim and is a 29 inch tire.

I run Sun Singletrack rims which are 31mm outside width, with Maxxis Larsen TT 2.35's. I don't know the weight of the singletracks, but they aren't super heavy or anything. The Larsen TT's are right around 600g for the folding bead version, and they roll really well. I've never measured to see if they're true to size, but they look like balloons on my bike, so that's a good sign.

Notubes ZTR Flow rims at 470 grams and inner width of 23mm.
Continental Trail King(former Rubber Queen) with enlarged casing. Their 2.2 is actually closer to 2.35(excellent rear tire), and 2.4 version is 2.5(running this one up fron and always get comments of how big it is) Ridiculously fast tire with very low rolling resistance. Very grippy if you get them with Black Chili compound. I run UST version with ZTR Flows and yellow tape, will never switch to anything else.

Edit: also, if you look at the ZTR rim profile, tire hinges are very low and allow more tire volume to be used. It is their signature design. Very good for tubeless setup.

"Flow" is characteristic of the rider, not of the trail.

Velocity Blunt is always a safe bet when you are looking to run a higher volume tire and not pick up the weight of a DH/FR rim.

As a general rule of thumb, Kendas run wide. The Blue Groove single ply 2.4 is a really, really big tire with excellent rolling resistance and an all conditions tread. I have also been very happy with my specialized 2.35 eskar control tire. Very light for its volume in the s-works casing, excellent grip and no durability complaints in my four seasons riding on it.
