If you are looking for a "fun" FS and were thinking a spearfish, I'd suggest checking out a horsethief? 120mm travel bike, "A very capable climber, Horsethief does have a slight bias toward descending, letting you enjoy the fruits of your uphill labor. By designing the bike for use with a shorter than normal stem, the body is positioned better for aggressive riding."

From what I've read it's a lot more fun to ride, just doesn't climb quite the same. (Which doesn't matter if you aren't racing.) They have a Medium on closeout at Rochester Bike Shop, and if I had the $$$, I'd be considering it right now.

Haha, no comment on the latter. As for the former, well I want that horsethief gone so that I stop thinking about putting it on a credit card every time I am in there.

Any idea of what kind of discount we're talking about on the Horsethief? Yeah, I know I should just call, but I don't want to get myself worked up...

It was listed at $3k, they are asking like $2500 now? I know it has a stans wheelset on it, not sure what it comes with typically, I think maybe it was a custom build out? They also have a M spearfish there for $2k I believe, also on sale.

By no means embarrassed, just feel a bit silly, since I started off convinced I was getting a 29er. Anyhow, I tried everything I could put my leg over (mostly 29ers), and it came down to an Anthem 29er or a Trance 26er.

Came home in a Trance! (sorry, don't have a picture host atm...)

JSJ,
I hope you enjoy your new bike.
In the end you are the one spending your money.
Most of the replies to this kind of question are always : " buy a bike like mine" or " buy a bike like I want". These replies are mostly tweets and sometimes they fit their kids and even wives into the tweet.
Of corase, most of these questions are really just tweets.
It can't be helped this is the age of social media. We all do it. So I am glad you made your own choice.

So what is you next bike?
26, 27, 29, or 700

Very cool. 8) I had a Giant Trance X2 before the Anthem 29er myself. It was a great bike. It had big travel for big hits and the 26" wheels climbed pretty darn good. The things I noticed it lacked was in handling at places like Tree Farm or anywhere else things got tight. But that is the difference between All Mountain and XC geometry, meant for two different disciplines. It certainly was more tossable than the 29er though. My personal opinion was that it was actually almost too much suspension for SE Michigan trails, but like I said, my opinion. I was very happy with the bike and the only reason I even swapped rides was because it was totalled when I got hit by a car. Personally, I would love to have both rides to have the best of both worlds. I truly enjoyed the Trance with it's longer travel and better climbing characteristics at PLRA better than the 29er, but I truly enjoy the 29er better at places like Addison, Stony, ILRA, and Tree Farm than the 26er. Again, all personal opinion. Enjoy the ride!

The model I got features the Fox Talas, which switches from 100 - 120 -140 mm travel on the fly. I was at Tree Farm on Friday, and I used 100 mm for the climbs and XC type sections, then 140 mm for the various obstacles. :D
