Women's Mountain Biking

Women are active at all levels of the MMBA.  Friendships develop between novice and experienced riders, beginners and pros.  The MMBA supports programs that offer women the opportunity to mountain bike in a safe and fun environment.

Visit the MMBA Forum's The Dirl Grrrls Lounge to connect with other women who love to hit the trails.

Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW)

The MMBA has teamed up with the Michigan DNR to hold an annual women's mountain biking clinic through their Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) initiative. Held at Stony Creek, sixty women attend sessions on riding skills, maintenance, nutrition, racing, and more. Year after year, this has been an extremely successful event due in large part to the many helpful volunteers and the spirited participants.

Women will have several opportunities to learn about the different aspects of mountain biking with clinics that are geared toward riders of all levels:

  • Skills Clinic - riding techniques
  • Maintenance Clinic - general bike maintenance and addressing mechanical problems on the trails
  • Mountain Biking 101 - question and answer session.

Girlbike

This active group of women lead women-only rides on a variety of mountain bike trails throughout Southeast Michigan. Their Monday evening rides are at 6:30 p.m. at the ever-popular Island Lake Recreation Area. Their weekly rides run from the beginning of May through the end of September. Riders of all skill levels are welcome.  This is a no-drop ride, meaning that the whole group will stick together.

Velo Bella

Velo Bella is a non-profit, grassroots, multi-discipline cycling team whose mission is "to encourage women to get out and ride a bike, race a bike, and to eventually grow the pool of talent and have a bit of fun along the way. While the core Velo Bella Team is a committed group of female racers, membership includes female cyclists interested in completing their first race, century, or even group ride."

Connect with the Velo Bella ladies on their regional forum or general forum.
